CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle bodywork that evaluates and enhances the functioning of the CranioSacral system, which consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

CST practitioners, using a soft touch about the weight of a nickel, release restrictions in the CranioSacral system. By assisting the body's natural healing processes in relieving the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system, CranioSacral therapy can boost overall health and increase resistance to disease helping alleviate a wide range of medical problems including:

  • Chronic neck and back pain disorders.

  • Migraines and headaches.

  • Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.

  • Chronic fatigue.

  • Fibromyalgia.

  • Stress and tension related problems.

  • Head injuries.

  • Birth trauma.

  • Tinnitus and vertigo.

  • Sciatica.

  • Depression and anxiety.

Osteopathic physician, Dr. John Upledger, first observed the rhythmic movement of the CranioSacral system in 1970. Upledger spent the next 13 years scientifically confirming the existence of cranial bone motion based on Dr. William Sutherland's research, which began in the early 1900s.

A CranioSacral Therapy session is done through light, comfortable clothing with the client lying on a massage table. Experiences during a session are as individualized as the clients themselves, varying from deep relaxation or even sleep, to the client expressing emotions and sensations they may be experiencing in their body. The therapist may stand or sit at various times throughout the session at the client's head, middle torso and feet.

Results following a CST session can be diverse as well. Some clients feel like sleeping after a session, while others have increased energy. Pain reduction or an increase in function may occur immediately or it may develop in the next few days. It isn't unusual for improvement to occur weeks after the session as the body continues to "unwind." The number of sessions needed varies from just one up to three or more a week over the course of several weeks.

There are more than 50,000 practitioners trained in CST worldwide. Rena Belch and Heather Gazvoda practice CST at Haven Massage Therapy. Please call 440-331-5660 with any questions. For a more in-depth look at CranioSacral Therapy click on http://www.upledger.com.
